Blending Of Moods
We all know the feeling of walking into work and having someone directly affect your mood for better or worse! It’s obvious that you can share your emotions with others, but what further insights can be gleaned from workplace research?
Firstly, emotions can be defined as the response of your mood (your affect: a short-term, intense feeling) to a stimulus. They’re immediate, and we spend our waking hours in one or another.
Why Do We Share Emotions?
We’ve successfully evolved as individuals through cooperation leaving deeply rooted tribal tendencies. Sharing states of mind is a very useful form of communication as you’re inducing patterns of behavior from them. It carries a lot of weight in communication.
How Do We Share Emotions?
For example, Sigal Barsade, a world leader in the field of emotional study in the workplace states in an article:
“It starts when we automatically mimic other people’s facial expressions, body language, tone of voice — which we’re hardwired to do from infancy. What happens next is also “infectious”. Through a variety of physiological and neurological processes, we actually feel the emotions we mimicked — and then act on them.”
Good Mood Linked To Effective Leadership
Her research further shows that when you occupy a leadership position, your positive mood is directly linked to the perception of your charisma from the team around you. This can cause what experts in the field refer to as an affective spiral. This is when the emotions of the group influence each other and converge in a certain direction.
If positive, this can lead to greater cooperativeness.
Emotions Converging Builds Your Culture
Convergence of emotions over a long duration of time is also another way of understanding your team’s culture – a lasting trend in emotional contagion. This makes the mechanism key to the success of your team.
Emotions As A Circuit
When communicating, your emotional state becomes a circuit with the others involved. You are constantly inputing a state of mind into a feedback loop. Therefore it is so important that you are cautious of your state of mind in the workplace as it places such a significant role in the health of your business.
Stillness Enhancing Company Culture
Stillness is the best tool we’ve found for controlling your state of mind. The ability to wipe your mind clear of the stories, the hallucination of past or future, helps to return to a state of peace.
This state of peace acts as a wedge interrupting the flow of emotions that may not be serving you. You can leverage states of Stillness to improve your affect throughout the day. Thus, the states you are sharing with your team are more optimal. This has a domino effect and ultimately builds to a more positive company culture!
